To posit that the roles depicted on television are driving the roles as they exist in reality is backward.
Certainly the television execs & producers understand that men, as they are in reality, will readily identify with other males in the typical male roles.
Likewise, with women.
Yes, Paula Deen has great business savvy, but that admirable trait will hardly draw the grandmotherly viewers.
Guy Fieri is popular with male viewers because he presents his show in a very guy-oriented format.
'Tis more the reflection on the reality of society, rather than the maker of societal norms.
