The Marian University Men’s lacrosse team will begin their inaugural season on February 15th with a game against Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas. This will mark the first time that the university has fielded a lacrosse team.  With the addition of men’s lacrosse there are now 21 different sports teams that represent Marian University.

The Sabres will be led by first-year head coach, Reid Mayberry. Mayberry was a decorated player in both high school and college. In high school, he garnered All-American honors while winning four district championships and a regional title. He won a National Championship at Salisbury University in 2008 and picked up all-conference honors at Roanoke College in 2012. Mayberry enters Marian with previous coaching experience from Roanoke College and Widener University.

The roster for the first season of Sabres lacrosse consists of 20 players. There are 18 freshmen, a junior-transfer, and one senior. The talent platform reaches far beyond just the state of Wisconsin: states such as Maryland, Arizona, California, and Florida will be represented by the young men wearing black and blue on Thursday.

After opening play with a brief stint in Arkansas and Texas, the Sabres will return home to the Midwest for a pair of non-conference games against North Central (Minnesota) and Dubuque. Smith Field will host its first-ever Marian lacrosse game against Calvin under the lights on Thursday March 8th. Following another non-conference tilt on the road, Marian will make their Midwest Lacrosse Conference Debut in Monmouth, Illinois.

The Sabres will face off against Cornell College, Concordia Chicago, Concordia Wisconsin, Fontbonne, and MSOE at Smith Field this spring. Most of their road games and all of their home games can be live-streamed through the University.

Whether it be wandering out to Smith Field or watching via live broadcast, the 2018 Marian Men’s lacrosse season will not be one you want to miss. The addition of this team should make Sabres supporters excited—not only will it give fans and community members another activity to watch in Fond du Lac, but there is certainly hope that the lacrosse team will bring a conference championship to Marian in the near future.
