As the fall sports wrap up, we saw some outstanding games played from our athletes, and even though not all games were won, we continue to support our Sabres. With Men’s and Women’s Soccer, Women’s Volleyball and Tennis all done with their seasons, we get a chance to watch some new sports. Women’s Soccer made it to the NACC tournament before losing to Illinois Tech in the first round.

Starting this Winter is Men’s and Women’s Ice Hockey, Men’s and Women’s Basketball, as well as Men’s Volleyball. There have been some changes to the Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams including new head coaches for both teams. Drake Diener is the new head coach for the Men’s Basketball team with Marcus Wiegert in the assistant position.

Diener joined the Sabres after playing for the past 12 years overseas in Italy with a professional team. Earning the Italian league MVP during his 2013-2014 season with the team. Diener also has a Bachelor’s degree in Education from the University of DePaul, where he also played basketball. Diener comes from a line of basketball coaches including his father and brother who both build championship-caliber programs with their teams. His father was a head coach for our very own Fond du Lac High School, while his brother currently coaches at Rockhurst University.

The Women’s new head coach is Christine Keller with Katie Golomski as assistant. Christine Keller announced in May of 2018 that she will become head coach of Women’s Basketball program here at Marian. Before Marian she spent two years at Greendale High school, as well as Pius XI High school in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Her first season on staff at Pius XI she led her team to a 26-3 record and a state championship. While in college she played one season at NCAA Division 1 University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, leading her team to a second-place finish.

In addition to the new Women’s head coach, they announced a new assistant coach, Katie Golomski. Golomski spent three seasons at Lindenwood University-Belleville as a Graduate Assistant. During Katie’s playing career she achieved a school record of 268 three-pointers. With three honorable mentions under her wing she was also named the Midwest Collegiate Conference Newcomer of the Year following her freshman season. Closing out her career with 1,087 points, we are excited to welcome her to our team.

As the snow starts to fall the Men’s Ice Hockey has started off their season exceptionally well beating the No. 2 spot, Adrian, for the very first time in program history last Saturday. Their home opener is Friday November 9th at 7pm at the Blue Line Family Ice Center located at 550 Fond Du Lac Ave. From the ice rink to the hard wood floors, the Women’s Basketball home opener game is Wednesday November 14th against Concordia Chicago with Men’s Ice Hockey hosting the number one seed UW-Stevens Point Friday November 16th. Check out the eSport Club at the hockey game Friday night. eSports competes against other colleges and universities while bringing the Marian student community together.
