Macron gives France's highest honor to Randolfe, leader of the opposition to Bolsonaro

After the French president, Emmannuel Macron, receive Lula (PT) at the Élysée Palace, in Paris, with the honors of head of State, the French government will hand over the country’s highest honor to senator Randolfe Rodrigues (Rede-AP ).

The Légion d’honneur commendation, the highest distinction in France and one of the most famous decorations in the world, will be presented to the parliamentarian on December 6th. The ceremony will be held at the French embassy in Brasília.

Leader of the opposition in the Senate, the congressman was the vice president of the CPI of Covid and is one of the biggest opponents of the Jair Bolsonaro government.

In addition to him, the president of Fiocruz, Nísia Trindade Lima, and Sister Rosane Ghedin were also nominated for the honor.

The French government claims that the decoration is a recognition for the role of the parliamentarian in confronting Covid-19 in Brazil —Randolfe was the vice president of Covid’s CPI— and for his “fervent defense” of the environment and the Agreement on Paris, “as illustrated by its strong commitment to the struggle for the preservation of reserves in the Amazon” and its “relentless dedication to the development of the neighboring regions of Amapá and French Guiana.”

Since 1802, the honor has already been granted to former presidents Fernando Henrique Cardoso, José Sarney and Juscelino Kubitschek, to writer Paulo Coelho, to Dom Pedro 2º and to Mar echal Rondon, among other Brazilian personalities.

The awarding of the decoration to Randolfe will take place after Bolsonaro called the meeting between Lula and Macron a “provocation”, saying that the PT and the French president “speak the same language”.

“Macron was always against us, and he always hit us on the issue of the Amazon. As if he had preserved something, he and his predecessors had preserved something in France. It seems like a provocation, yes”, said Bolsonaro, in an interview with Sociedade da Bahia radio.

“France is not an example for us, much less its Macron. Your Macron is very well accompanied by Lula, and Lula, very well by your Macron. They understand each other, speak the same language.”
