Krystina Murphy
Krystina Murphy is currently a junior majoring in Organizational Communication and minoring in Psychology. At the age of eighteen, Krystina had a stroke and contracted mono; thus, leaving her with hearing loss. She now embraces Deaf culture by saying “Deaf gain,” rather than hearing loss. Because she primarily focuses on reading lips, she liked that the classes at Marian University were small. This made it easier for her to focus and communicate in class. Although she speaks English proficiently, and her deafness can go unnoticed, her preference of communication is American Sign Language (ASL). In her free time, she advocates for the Deaf community and teaches children and adults ASL. In addition to this, she has just recently found out that she is pregnant and is trying to establish a good life for her family. After Marian, Krystina plans to further her education and hopes to teach several types of communication classes at a college.
